Tiger Profile: Heng Leng Chee

Former Associate Professor, Department of Community Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia and former Research Fellow, Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore


Heng Leng works in the field of health care policy, and is a member of the Citizens’ Health Initiative, founded by a group of academics, researchers, activists and advocates in 1998 to work for equitable, accessible and sustainable health care in Malaysia. After graduating from Wellesley, where she studied Chinese with Mrs. Lin, Heng Leng earned a master’s degree in public health at Harvard, and then a doctorate from the University of Malaya. She worked for many years in public universities in Malaysia and Singapore, and has published widely on health, health care, and international medical travel. Her publications include a special issue in Global Social Policy on international medical travel (2010), and the book Health Care in Malaysia: Dynamics of Provision, Financing and Access (2007).
